Arthurdale
I've been reading some ACT reports on JREG, concerning their "get the vote" out in West Virginia and Pennsylvannia. In a time that our current economy is a jobless recovery and the worst since Herbert Hoover, Arthurdale, a project in West Virginia came to mind. Arthurdale was a special project of Eleanor Roosevelt's. She was able to get funds and used quite a bit of her own to create a better community in supplying new homes with indoor plumbing (at a time even my mom was still using an outdoor toliet), modern appliances, and got her friends to supply jobs. Just think with all of the weath that was created by the mess in Iraq, and all of the executives who continued to get bonuses while outsourcing their jobs; they could have been creating better communities in the US.
It saddens me that to read WV is still a very conservative state, despite having senators who have gone to bat for them, and they are more worried about the Bible being banned than having better opportunities.

Interesting, Benny. I do not feel it is sad that WV is a very conservative state. The Bible thing is jus a scare tactic and a despicable one. No one is going to ban the Bible. Democrats are Christians too. They know this, but are just reacting with their emotions.
In fact in the last 11 presidential elections WV has voted nearly equal times for the republican and the democrat. West Virginia voted for Clinton twice ('92 & '96), Carter ('76), Humphrey ('72), Johnson ('64) and Kennedy ('60). The Fli side is G. W. Bush ('00), G. H.W . Bush ('88), Reagan twice ('80 & '84), and Nixon ('72). I find it very interesting that to date the only presidents that WV has voted for twice are Clinton and Reagan. This couldn't be more of a contrast could it?

David Brooks, of the NYT on "Ruling Class Wars"
Professors, on the other hand, are classic paragraph people and lean Democratic. Eleven academics gave to the Kerry campaign for every 1 who gave to Bush's. Actors like paragraphs, too, albeit short ones. Almost 18 actors gave to Kerry for every 1 who gave to Bush. For self-described authors, the ratio was about 36 to 1. Among journalists, there were 93 Kerry donors for every Bush donor. For librarians, who must like Faulknerian, sprawling paragraphs, the ratio of Kerry to Bush donations was a whopping 223 to 1.
Laura Bush has a lot of work to do in shoring up her base.
Ruling Class Wars Some of it may have to do with Laura Bush, but more with the Patriot Act and how less federal funding than promised for "No Child Left Behind" which didn't include school librarians in many places. Some were left go when the tax base could not support the school system.
