News & Observer Book Review: Saving Graces

Straight Shooter: Elizabeth Edwards offers a refreshing twist to the campaign memoir -- candor
By Rob Christensen, News & Observer

Most campaign autobiographies are self-serving pap, filled with Oscar-night style thank yeeeews to everyone who helped along the way. There is a little bit of that in Elizabeth Edwards' gracefully written book, "Saving Graces," but thankfully not much.

Indeed, the would-be First Lady Elizabeth Edwards has written a campaign autobiography unlike any other -- filled with questions about death and grieving, illness and recovery, and yes, her husband's ongoing pursuit of the White House. Her refreshingly intimate and, at times, powerful account of her life includes her harrowing battle with breast cancer just after the 2004 election and the devastating loss of her teenage son in an automobile accident in 1996, as well as her adventures in the world of big-time politics.
