Not True, Boston Phoenix

Oliver Willis tipped his readers off to the Boston Phoenix's Unsexiness Men of the Year. Most of the choices are either based on looks or some kind of indiscretion. That said, some of the choices I disagree with:

John Mayer
Hugh Jackman

and at #20.

The higher the rank, the worse the BP thinks the man is.

JRE's indiscretion doesn't merit being in the top 20 with Rush Limbaugh, who says mean things about Elizabeth Edwards and can't stay married.

Bet none of the Phoenix eds have ran 5 marathons:

John Edwards's five marathons

1982 Marine Corps (3:37:16)
1983 Marine Corps (3:30:18)
1986 Philadelphia (N/A)
1994 Camp Lejeune (4:05:56)
1999 Marine Corps (4:51:27)

Here's a recent pic of him at Brown University. One cannot tell me that he doesn't look sexy.

Pooh on those who are envious of JRE's looks--and oratory abilities. He got a standing O at that speech two weeks ago.

  • I wonder... is that water
John Edwards is drinking from the
"Fountain of Youth"? That would explain a lot of things.
If not, then I will have to go with
    my original theory that
John Edwards has a "Dorian Gray" picture hidden in the atic.
    Just joking.
    John Edwards is
    "The Sexest Man Alive!!!!"

  • Sorry, I don't see a handsome man. I see another cheatin' husband. Too bad. Being sexy is more than looks. And if he has a "Dorian Gray" picture, it was a cheap copy. He's been drinking something alright but I doubt it was from a fountain.

Elizabeth is the one who is beautiful. She valued her family, he didn't, he embarrased them.

Moral to the story ladies, leave other women's families alone.

  • Oklahoma, honey, give it a rest.
Your pretentious ravings have gotten old.

By Blogger Cherubim, at 5:45 PM

  • I'm with Oklahomagirl - JRE is hiding behind EE now that he had to tell her the truth about his affair and the baby. Can't wait to hear what Elizabeth has to say on May 11 on Oprah.

  • In hard times like these, it is comforting to know that we have patriotic citizens, like John and Elizabeth Edwards.

By Blogger Cherubim, at 9:21 PM

  • Cherubim, your constant ass kissing is old too. Growup.

StandupGuy, I don't understand why people blame Elizabeth for his zipper problems. She did the best she could under the circumstances. What was she suppose to do? She's got cancer and two small children. She's getting cancer treatments and trying to care for and manage the lives of two small children and he's on tour with his mistress.

We don't know how much input she had in continuing the campaign. Any man who has the guts to do a Presidential Announcement Tour with his mistress insead of his wife and kids, may not have given her a say in what he did. For all we know it was the mistress who encouraged him. She certainly enjoyed being there. At that point he may have been delusional re: the situation.

There were pictures of them and u-tube.

In Iowa he looked straight at the woman with a camera and says to her "I'm so glad to be here." with a great big stupid grin on his face. The woman was the mistress. Then he turns to the crowd and asks for their trust and money. He had to be splitting his realities at this point.

He owes all of us an apology. Maybe not on the level he owes his family but he owes us, all of us. He needs to open his blog and take his hits. He needs to interact and answer the questions honestly and not to make himself look good. Maybe then he can redeem himself. If he truly wants to work on poverty and healthcare, he needs to make people trust him again. Hiding behind Elizabeth and the kids and not dealing with the anger his supporters have won't get him there.

By Blogger oklahomagirl, at 6:03 AM

  • OklahomaGirl - No I don't blame EE for JRE's zipper problem. JRE was pleasuring himself and obviously thought he wouldn't get caught (JRE's bad karma was getting RH pregnant). My comment is in regards to the upcoming Oprah interview to be televised on Monday, May 11 which is the day before her book is being released. I'm expecting Oprah to ask EE how she is doing healthwise and her book. Then JRE will join them and he will finally admit he is the father of RH's daughter. I bet he'll even say EE and their kids have accepted her into their family. Honestly, now when I see or read anything about JRE, I see just another lying/cheating politician.

By Blogger StandupGuy?, at 10:24 AM

  • Well just great. Now JE is being investigated by the FBI and IRS for campaign finance violations related to paying off RH, as well as showing her a good time.

She may go to jail for income tax evasion. She ran her big mouth about the $15,000 a month and the $50,000 plane trip to get her out of the country and away from reporters before his pathic news conference and now the IRS may want to know where her tax returns are. HA HA. The National Enquirer turned out not to be her friend. They reported most of her financal information. What was she thinking? That no one in the IRS read the Enquirer?

Hey RH, Karma is a b***h.

JE may not go to jail but this is gonna hurt.

I'm so sorry for Elizabeth. She doesn't need this stress.

I'm also sorry for the people who are getting hauled into court to testify. Lawyers cost a lot of money. Look how much people had to spend when the went to court because of Bill Clinton.

By Blogger oklahomagirl, at 10:57 AM

  • I enjoy reading this blog but this post is disappointing. No doubt it was written with good intentions but it serves as a place for people to repeat and even expand upon (without any proof) tabloid stories. I believe I've seen references to Mrs. Edwards having read this blog and if she see it, apologies to her!

To the people who want to spew vitriol, it doesn't help anyone. It would be interesting to know what you get from it. Okay, maybe not interesting since it's just sad unless they work for the tabloids and then it's about $$$$$$$$$$.

By Blogger indyvoter, at 5:04 PM

  • I would imagine that Elizabeth would find this post a complement to her husband. I've never made an y secret as to my opinion concerning John's youthful looks.

As far as the other comments, they have strong feelings, obviously, about John.

I'm not surprised though if John's campaign is being questioned. I sure as hell though wish the gov't officials wouldn't leak such information.

By Blogger benny06, at 4:04 PM

  • Benny, I didn't mean to offend you. Everyone is entitled to his/her opinion and strong feelings are understandable. What isn't so easy to understand is why people want not only to believe but also to add baseless speculation to the tabloids.

The National Enquirer's "editor" publicly explained how they were playing games with this story. They printed a picture they claimed was from the meeting at the hotel. Later, and very quietly, they admitted it wasn't from that date. They didn't say when it was supposedly from or if it was even real.

They count on the fact that people only remember the original story. It's along the same lines as printing something truly heinous on the cover and later burying the retraction in small print at the back of the rag. Of course, the retraction isn't noticed and the original story continues.

It's too bad the legitimate newspapers are going out of business and the trash survives.

By Blogger indyvoter, at 5:51 PM

  • The Enquirer may be "tabloid trash", but they were right about the affair. BTW, I feel most news papers today are trash. They tell you what they want to tell you and not what you need to know. Maybe we all wouldn't be in such a mess if newspapers did their jobs instead of towing a party line. The Daily Oklahoman is one of the worst. It's about to go out of business.

Indyvoter, I didn't say anything that Elizabeth doesn't already know. She knows more about it than I do and may have known about it a long time.

With all the lies that have been told and all the money that has been spent, supposedly, there had to be investigations eventually. The IRS is going to want to know why no taxes were paid on the money given to Hunter. Maybe she did pay taxes. God knows there were enough lawyers involved, surly someone told her she would have a hugh tax liability. She was supposedly getting 15,000 a month and rent paid on a multiple million dollar house. And there was that 50,00 dollar flight to where ever that she took before JE's confession. Remember Tom Dashael got caught over some limo rides. There is at least a gift tax owed. Probably 20.000 to 50,000 dollars. She better have saved some of that money. Even if she did save money, people go to jail for not reporting income.

As for campaign or PAC money spent on her, that's for the powers that be to figure out. You would assume that JE knew better and used his own money. But then I assumed he knew better than to pick a woman up off the street.

Iv'e been complaining about my 325.00dollars since this whole thing began. I even called the office in Chapel Hill and asked for my money back. I knew I wasn't going to get it and the young woman on the phone was very polite about it. But given the lawyer fees these people are going to pay, who are going to be called to give testimony , I think I will let this go now. Bill Clinton cost his people hundreds of thousands of dollars in lawyer fees and some got caught doing things they shouldn't have been doing that were seperate from the Clinton thing. This may happen in this case.

Anyway, I won't be giving anymore money to a male politician I can't eyeball.

By Blogger oklahomagirl, at 4:20 AM

  • FYI - Recipients don't report gifts as income. If the gift is over a certain amount (which changes with inflation), the giver reports the gift to the IRS. But if services are provided as part of employment (such as Daschle getting a car and driver as part of his consulting work), the fair market value must be reported as income along with any salary/payment.

By Blogger Anonymous, at 6:09 AM

  • It is extemely strange to me that every time John Edwards speaks publically (upcoming Oprah interview) a "story" appears in the Clinton supported owned National Enquirer.

Even stranger to me is why would the investigators from the U.S. Justice Department and the FBI become sources for the National Enquirer, which usually pays money to its sources (like the Hunter woman) for stories?
Are the National Enquirer and the Justice Department now one and the same?

Oh well, maybe the extortionist Rielle Hunter really did not pay all her taxes on her ill-gotten
    monetary gain.

Meanwhile, the "Other America" is made of flesh and bones and it is hurting. We in the "Other America" need a National Spokesperson.
I'm O.K. with John Edwards as my spokesperson.
During the Presidential campaign, John Edwards said about the majority of "Other" Americans, (those who are not rich and do not own a bank) the following:
"They persevere. They are strong. They are courageous. They go out everyday and do what they can for their family. These people are entitled to dignity and respect." This needs to be said, again, by someone, right now.
    Oklahoma girl
I know my money was well spent.

  • Cherubim, Law enforcement officers are likely breaking the law if they are leaking information about investigations and grand jury proceedings whether they are paid for the info or not. Washington has historically leaked like a sieve but maybe this administration will enforce the laws and put a stop to this practice regardless of the politics of the target.

  • Summers Received Hundreds Of Thousands In Speaking Fees From TARP Recipients
    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/04/03/summers-received-hundreds_n_183058.html

    Aside:
(Larry Summers is not being investigated. He is being embraced. )

Barack Obama's chief economic adviser, Larry Summers, received hundreds of thousands of dollars in speaking fees last year from firms that have direct financial interests before the government or are intimately involved in the White House's bank relief programs.

The White House released late Friday the personal financial disclosure forms of many high-ranking administration officials. The document provided for Summers, who serves as one of the president's closest confidants, underscores just how close some of these officials are to the industry over which they now have oversight.

Among the firms that paid Summers large amounts in speaking fees include J.P. Morgan Chase. That bank offered the former Harvard president and Treasury Secretary $67,500 for a February 1, 2008 engagement. It has received $25 billion in government bailout funds.

Citigroup, which has received $50 billion in taxpayer help, paid Summers $45,000 for a speech in March 2008 and another $54,000 for a speech that May.

Goldman Sachs, which has received $10 million in bailout funds, paid Summers $135,000 for a speech on April 16, 2008 and another $67,500 for a speech on June 18, 2008.

Summers also received about $5.2 million over the past year in salary from the major hedge fund D.E. Shaw.

The speech payments will undoubtedly raise questions as to the impartiality of the economic advice Summers is providing to the president. Already viewed as too favorably disposed to Wall Street interests, the lavish payments for speeches will provide further fodder for those who think the administration has been forgiving in their approach to the banking industry.

In a prepared statement, spokesman Ben LaBolt said that, "From the first days of the administration, we have bolstered accountability over banks and reformed the TARP process so that taxpayers can see how their money is being spent, the influence of lobbyists is curbed, executive compensation is reined in, and firms are required to show how they will preserve or expand lending using government funds. Dr. Summers has been at the forefront of this administration's work to shore up our nation's financial system and to put in place a regulatory framework that will strengthen the financial system and its oversight - all in an effort to help the families across America who have paid a very steep price for risky decisions made by Wall Street executives."

Below is a list of the notable speeches given by Summers last year, the amount he was paid, and the date of the address. Further down is a PDF of Summers' Personal Financial Disclosure form, released on late Friday afternoon. Tell us what you see.
