About My Momma


Vernell Neinast Smith died Sunday, March 29, 2009 in Lubbock after a brief illness. She was 78.

Services were held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 1, 2009 at Highland Baptist Church. The Rev. Stan Blevins officiated, and burial was in the Tahoka Cemetery under the direction of White Funeral Home.

Nell Smith was born Vernell Lena Neinast near Sagerton on February 16, 1931. She was a 1948 graduate of Stamford High School and later attended Draughn’s Business College. She wed James W. “Smitty” Smith in 1954 and he preceded her in death on June 8, 1990 after 36 years of marriage.

Nell worked as a bookkeeper for various businesses. She was a fantastic cook and enjoyed watching sports of all kinds. She especially loved Texas Tech and Dallas Cowboys football games. She was a much loved and devoted grandmother who attended all of her grandchildren’s sporting events. Nell also enjoyed family reunions.

Survivors include her son, Rick Smith of Kentfield, Calif; her two daughters, Donna Palmer of Lubbock, Benny of Champaign, Ill., and their spouses; six grandchildren, Brandi Blair of Burleson, Kristopher Smith of Dallas, Lindsay Smith and Savannah Smith of Kentfield, Calif, Zane Palmer of Austin, Abby Palmer of Lubbock; one great-granddaughter, Bethany Blair, as well as many nieces and nephews. The family also wished to acknowledge Wynell Madison for all of the years of service to Mrs. Smith.

Friends and family visited the White Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m, Tuesday, March 31, 2009.
