John Edwards Lands a Speaking Gig at Brown

According to the AP, JRE is going to be doing some public speaking again; this time at Brown University:

RALEIGH, N.C. — A Brown University student group says two-time presidential candidate John Edwards will speak on the campus.

Edwards has remained largely out of the spotlight since publicly acknowledging last summer that he had an extramarital affair with a woman as he planned his second White House bid in 2006.

Edwards canceled a series of events before the November election, saying he didn't want to be a distraction to former rival, now-President Barack Obama. He made a couple of quiet appearances after the election but has since avoided public speeches.


Looks like March 10th.

Good for JRE and the college crowd. I'd like to hear his thoughts about Obama's slower withdrawal of troops from Iraq and other ideas to tackle poverty issues. I heard third hand he has been doing some work for the Poverty Center again, but on the sidelines.

Update from the Brown website:

John Edwards, former United States Senator and the 2004 Democratic Vice-Presidential Nominee, will recount why he started a career in public service in his lecture "Beautiful America" tonight, March 10, at 8pm in Salomon 101.

Doors will open to ticket holders at 7:15, and tickets will be accepted
until 7:45. The lecture is open to the public - space permitting -
after that.

Sounds inspiring. JRE's talk is from 8-9:30 ET.

  • Yesterday was Rielle Hunter's daughter's first birthday. Do you all think that's JRE's daughter? If so, did he celebrate with the child? If it is indeed Taylor's, did he celebrate?

  • Jean, when Rielle Hunter agrees to a paternity test, which JRE has publicly said he will do, then we will know if she is his and Rielle's child. Otherwise, I don't believe her. She's a gold digger, and JRE obviously misjudged her, a very foolish mistake in JRE's life.

    I'll be interested in seeing Elizabeth's book in May to read if she talks about the affair and the offspring thereof.

    But the admitted affair does not diminish his ideas for the country. He was the most progressive candidate and his ideas were on the mark. Many times I have shook my head and said, JRE was right.

  • Jean, If the father (no matter who he is) has a dime to his name, she'd be going after him for all she could get. You can pretty much tell the father isn't wealthy and she was just taking advantage of the situation to take what she could get while it lasted. "Gold digger" is one of the nicer terms for her.

  • Benny and Cherubim, what do you think about the latest news from NE? I truly think he is the father, why else did he meet with her for 4+ hours at the hotel back in July? If it was just to talk - why spend 4 hours? and the time of day(night) it occurred is just too suspicious.

    Sure this younger woman should be named "Fortune" Hunter, but if that is his child, he should provide support.

  • Jean, until Ms. Fortune Hunter agrees to a paternity test, instead of the crock "of protecting child's privacy", Edwards is not legally the father of this child. Thus, he doesn't have to provide child support.

    The NE got the right tip about his visit in July, but beyond that, we really don't know much about the situation. I find it more odd that she was getting $15K per month from one of Edwards' friends until he died in October, and she has no money to show for any of it.

    I don't know if she is telling the truth or not. But she sure could clear this up with a paternity test, that Edwards has said he would be willing to take.

    Supposedly, Edwards has finally confessed to Elizabeth that he is the father of Frances Quinn Hunter. I'll never understand why he didn't back in August when all this came out about the affair. I always thought John's statement - he would gladly take a paternity test and Rielle saying she wouldn't submit her daughter to one was hokey. If John is the father he should be paying child support but he doesn't owe RH a dime. RH is getting money hungry.

    National Enquirer and Star publisher American Media has, for all practical purposes, gone bust.

    The AMI has been battling bankruptcy rumors for months, after taking on too much debt. Clearly, AMI couldn't afford to pay back what they owe. So now they've come to a resolution: handing 95% of the company over to creditors! Which means that David Pecker and the other investors who bought the company nine years ago have been left a stake that's worth next to nothing. This is, uh, "avoiding" bankruptcy:

    The agreement, which reduces the company’s debt by $227.2 million, transfers ownership of 95 percent of AMI’s common stock to bondholders, the company said Sunday evening. CEO David Pecker... and Evercore Partners bought American Media in 1999 for $850 million.

  • Shea - I guess it must be me but the little girl doesn't look John Edwards especially around the eyes and forehead (yes their blue eyes which Rielle has too). Rielle needs to get a job or take Edwards to court for child support but my guess is she doesn't want the paternity test because maybe this little girl isn't John Edwards.

  • She doesn't look like him to me either. She has a round face. Both RH and JE have long faces. Look at their pictures. From the mouth down the two of the look a like. Maybe their cousins, JE and RH that is. We need to see who else she was screwing.

    Still none of that means much. You need a DNA.

    He lied to Elizabeth about the affair, he lied about the baby ? he's probably lying about not marrying her when Elizabeth is no longer in the picture. Elizabeth needs to protect her children financially and personally from the possibility of RH being their stepmother and then let those two have at it. It won't last long and she'll find another man if she hasn't already. If Elizabeth gets most of the money for her kids then RH and JE will have to go to work. Too bad so sad.

    I'd be careful about ever believing him again. He'll protect himself before he protects Elizabeth and her kids. He's already shone that when he sent Ms. Mistress out of the county and let his family bare the brunt of that pathetic confession.

    It seems that even Rupert Murdoch isn"t immune to the downturn battering media companies.

    Rupert Murdoch said he wanted to build up The Journal"s newsroom. Now he is cutting jobs.
    The News Corporation, the media empire controlled by Mr. Murdoch, said Thursday that it lost $6.4 billion in its second quarter as profit fell sharply at its television and movie units. The company also took a large write-down of $8.4 billion, about $3 billion of which reflected a decline in the value of the company"s newspaper unit, which includes Dow Jones, the publisher of The Wall Street Journal.

    Excluding the write-down, the News Corporation had income of $320 million, or 12 cents a share, significantly below the Wall Street expectations. Analysts had forecast earnings of 19 cents a share, according to Thomson Reuters. Total revenue was $7.9 billion, compared with $8.59 billion a year earlier and the $8.4 billion analysts expected.
    Mr. Murdoch, the chairman and chief executive, said .... "While we anticipated a weakening, the downturn is more severe and likely longer-lasting than previously thought."He also suggested job cuts were in the offing, saying, "We are implementing rigorous cost-cutting across all operations and reducing head count where appropriate."

    I hope Elizabeth and her children are holding it together. Does anyone know if the Edwards are even together after this supposedly happened? I look forward to reading Elizabeth's new book when it comes out in May. Why doesn't Edwards see that RH is white trash for allowing her picture with Frances on the internet? The "friend" who gave this to FOX news had to have known FOX has never been a friend of the Edwards. I generally don't wish bad on anyone because my mother said that's not nice but dang I really don't like RH. Wish she would fall of the face of the earth. Sorry to rant.

  • Simply stated what Edwards did in inexcusable! That said, why does everyone believe a woman whose prior claim to fame was being a coke-head who slept around so much she was the model for a pathetic character in a bad novel? Look at some of the facts:

    By everyone’s accounts, she was not part of the campaign when her contract expired at the end of 2006. Don’t you think someone would have noticed and questioned her appearance on the campaign trail in 2007, especially since another, better videographer was hired?

    In Edwards’ interview with ABC, he clearly stated at their meeting that he didn’t agree to pay her anything. So despite the fact she was living the high life on Fred Baron’s dime, she was still looking for more money. Obviously Baron didn’t provide lifetime income so maybe she was angling for other ways to get a lottery jackpot.

    She claimed she wouldn’t agree to a paternity test to protect her daughter’s privacy but then she and her friends make pictures of the child public. Why would they do that? Because she isn’t satisfied with her 15 minutes of fame/infamy and likely is still looking for a payday. (If Edwards is the father, a paternity test would ensure her child support for the next 17 years. Of course, if Edwards isn’t the father, not only doesn’t she get child support but no one would pay a cent to her.)

    After Baron passed away, she was cut off financially. What did she do? Unlike the rest of us, she doesn’t seem inclined to get a J-O-B to support herself and her child. Instead she mooches off “friends” who are selling her story. How much of that money does she get in kickbacks? She certainly has other plans to keep her name and face in the “news” to try to profit regardless of who she may hurt – including her own child. Can you imagine this child growing up with paparazzi sneaking around to get photos of her all her life? Thanks Mom!

    This woman is NOT in love with Edwards and can’t expect to be with him. Anyone with a brain that hasn’t been addled by drugs would know that treating another person so horribly is a one way ticket to being alone. Blackmail/extortion isn’t a great foundation for a relationship. Each time Edwards tries to reestablish a role addressing poverty, she torpedoes him with her friends feeding the tabloids. And she thinks that will cause him to rush to her side?

    Maybe she doesn’t know what a real relationship is since she grew up with a father who killed horses, including hers, for insurance money. She doesn’t speak to her sister; although, the sister sells her “story” to the tabloids. Her “friends” are the people who write trashy novels about her and feed rumors so they can profit off her. When her daughter is old enough, she’ll likely run away as fast and as far as she can!

    By the way, she’s angry Elizabeth Edwards may drag her through the mud? 1.) Too late – she’s been in the mud most her life. 2.) She spoke to a Newsweek reporter derogatorily about Mrs. Edwards. 3.) She’s been putting Mrs. Edwards and her children through hell. Not that Mrs. Edwards is likely to address this trash (the fact is it could have been anyone) but if so, it’s only the tip of the iceberg of what she deserves.

  • All the rumor and tabloid garbage is so old. With everything going on in the country and world, the fascination with the idiotic is sad.

    Do not judge a good person by the worst thing he has ever done. (How many of us would wish that on ourselves?)

    Obviously the Edwardses are managing as according to the AP reporting on the 3/8 UNC game: "John Edwards attended with his wife, Elizabeth." All the best to them and their family!
