John Edwards Shines in Myrtle Beach

I watched intently the first half of the debate, but I must say that I enjoyed it very much. It was like watching those of us who support candidates in the blogosphere, lots of debating about character. Then JRE talks about how our squabbles aren't going to get health care for children or a college education for a young person.

Edwards tweaked both his opponents for making the debate about political squabbling instead of public policy. Returning to his populist economic platform -- especially salient as Americans ponder a recession -- he reminded voters that he was the only candidate to outline a comprehensive plan to end poverty, and the first to introduce a national economic stimulus proposal. His plan came out weeks before Clinton and Obama. The program drove the "party's policy agenda," as Paul Krugman explained, by advocating "aid to unemployed workers, aid to cash-strapped state and local governments," and alternative energy, (most of which Clinton later adopted in her plan). And while the debate moderators kept pushing trite racial questions, even asking Obama if Bill Clinton was the "first black president," Edwards outlined a vision of racial and economic equality, where "every American is of equal value."

Clover SC Native Hits the Trail for John Edwards

Good morning, BW readers. As we all know by now, JRE finished second in Iowa. My initial reaction was disappointment and maybe fearful, but after conversing with Larry Kissell (who is running for NC-08 and I donated to his campaign), Larry was right: the Iowa election signaled that the American people are ready for change. Obama just had more money, and combined with Clinton, outspent JRE 4 to 1. Clinton came in third. Obama did some horse trading and maneuvering that I thought was awful, but he won. And that's that.

But I wanted to share a bit of a story about a feller who is from Clover, SC, Rod Pursley, who went to Iowa right after Christmas and canvassed, phone banked, etc to help GOTC. Here's something from the Enquirer-Herald in SC:

Pursley, a Clover native who works at the University of Virginia, spent eight days in Iowa talking on the phone and braving 20-degree weather to knock on doors in a grass-roots effort that helped Edwards secure second place in Thursday's Iowa caucuses.

Helping a candidate who had 20 percent of the funding the two front-runners made the experience worth it, Pursley said.

"I just felt it was really important for me to put my money where my mouth (is)," he said.

Although he was disappointed Edwards didn't win first place, Pursley said he considers Iowa the calm before the storm for the Edwards campaign. As he drove into York County on Friday, he was already thinking about the South Carolina Democratic primary, which he'll help with on the weekends.

The Carolina primary is on January 26th.

Dedication amongst the JRE supporters. Sometimes dedication is worth a lot more than a loot of money.

JRE skipped the fancy 100 Club dinner where it was the Obamafest to begin with, and instead spoke to 550 regular people.

Debate is on at 7:45 CT on ABC. I'll report more news as it comes along today.

Harry Belefonte Endorses JRE in SC Today

Harry has always stood up for those in poverty and is an ardent civil rights activist. Interesting as he was in the movie, Bobby, last year.

John Edwards Buzz: the Workin' Man's Candidate

Matt from Rhode Island's Future reports that the Carpenters Union intend to endorse John Edwards. This is great news for JRE and the first union endorsement for him.

Nice to be first. The Carpenters are nailing for the best candidate.

This is what JRE had to say:

"I am honored to receive the support of the Carpenters Union," said Edwards. "For more than a century, they have been fighting for working Americans and standing up for the values that have made our country great - hard work, responsibility, and fairness. America was built by men and women who worked with their hands, and it's labor that made our country great. I look forward to joining with the Carpenters to build One America, where every person has the chance to work hard and get ahead."

I read on the Daily Kos (where I first saw this) that JRE is going to be a guest at a Labor Council gathering on Monday. Ah, there is a good reason for that: the Steelworkers are endorsing Edwards too.

Other good news today: JRE pulled up to second in the polls in South Carolina today. I understand he is at a rally in Spartanburg as I type this message.

Don't count out John Edwards. He is the most electable of all of the candidates.
